Muncaster Talks The Castles Wartime Secret

Muncaster Talks The Castles Wartime Secret

Tuesday 20 February 2024 from 10am

Muncaster Castle has a rich and vibrant past, hosting wonderful characters and fantastic collections. However, who would suspect that such an ancient dwelling would play a key role in World War II, protecting a large proportion of Britain’s national collection of modern art from the Tate Gallery in London from certain destruction.

This illustrated lecture explains why and how this happened, who was responsible, and what happened to these treasures during their time at Muncaster. It will incorporate images of some of the wonderful works held here, providing a rare insight into the secret part Muncaster played at this time.

10am: Arrival and refreshments in the Great Hall
10:30am: Talk by Dr Rob David, with introduction from a member of the Frost-Pennington Family
11:30am: Q & A
12:00pm- Free time to explore the Castle State Rooms, with Curators on hand for questions.

Your guest speaker will be Dr Rob David who prior to his retirement was a lecturer at Charlotte Mason College in Ambleside, and St Martin’s College Lancaster, also providing adult education classes at various venues. Rob has an extensive CV. He studied for the Diploma in Local History, an MA and a PhD at Lancaster University and was President of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society from 2017-2020, to name just a few of his achievements. Rob is now an independent researcher, producing many publications and informative lectures throughout the county.
